Weekly Update March 28

NEWS:

Students received permission slips for NOLA based on 80% work completion.  These have to be returned by Friday.  If your child has not received one yet, s/he needs to be meeting the 80% criteria before they get a permission slip.  

ACADEMICS:
Math:  1) ACE #1-2, page 44;  2) Packet given out today, due on Friday. 

Social Studies:  1) Current events due Wednesday.  2) Postcard or poem based on culture from the selected Africa book.  3) Notes on slavery today.

Language Arts:  Media Influences unit.  1) Channel surf to look for different commercials to critically review how men are stereotyped.  Can also use print ads. Describe in Writing notebooks.  2) Vocabulary due on Friday.

Science:  1) In-class lecture on Chemical Interactions . 2) Science Fair requirements handed out and students researched on Monday.  Proposal due on Friday.

Week of March 21

NEWS:  We received another grant from Rubin for Kids!  This is very exciting as it continues to bring us closer to our fundraising goal. 

ACADEMICS:

1)  Language Arts:  We started a new unit this week called, "Media Influences."  Homework from Monday:  Channel surf for 30 minutes and record the product, type, and who the audience would be.  2)  Watched a documentary on PBS focusing on "CoolHunt" and how merchants use teenagers to create and design the latest trends.  Students took notes and wrote a reflection in-class.  3)  Vocabulary due Friday - spelling and definitions.   Vocabulary words are at the bottom of this post.


2)  Science:  Answer questions in lab book:  pages 36-40.   *The big news is the upcoming Science Fair on June 2nd.  Students need to begin investigating for a project and submit a proposal.  Students will receive a packet with the criteria this week. 

3)  Social Studies:  Continual study on Africa!  News article due Wednesday.

4)  Math:  This week's work:  1)  Finish M & M bar graph.  2)  ACE #1, 2 page 16;  3)  ACE #8-11 page 18-19;  4)  ACE #3 page 17

5)  Reading:  Focus on Africa! reading books.

Weekly Update 3/14/11

NEWS:

Thank you to everyone who made our New Orleans Fund-raising dinner a success.  We really could not have done it without the parents and community members.  It was an amazing effort, and we are PROUD of all our JoMaNa students.

If you haven't already done so, please go to our Facebook page:  New Orleans Service-Learning Project.  Here is where we try to update the information and activities that are currently happening.

ACADEMICS:
1)  Math:  Yellow sheet due Wednesday.  ACE #9, 10, 11

2)  Science:  In-class discussion and reading.  Page 31 - answer questions.  Pages 32-37 - answer questions.

3)  Language Arts (Writing):  1)  Vocabulary due Friday (words at the bottom of this post).  Definitions and spelling test.  2)  Writing warm-up in-class today.  3)  Integrated reading/writing assignment:  Characterization Essay.  Rough draft due today, Final is due on Thursday.  We are using the Netbooks in class to type and edit final papers.

4)  Reading:  1)  Book groups (Annie, Farewell, Freak, War, and Who  . . . ) will be DONE on Thursday.  The Characterization essay is a part of this grade.  2)  New books were given for the Africa! unit.  The assignments will focus on Traits of a Reader.  3)  No Independent Book Project for the month of March.

5)  Social Studies:  1)  Current Events due on Thursday.  2)  Africa! unit - note-taking today.  Worked on brochure and notebooks in-class.  3)  Map quiz Friday - know where Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Senegal, and Togo are on the Africa map.

Week of March 7

Hello Parents and Supporters of JoMaNa Students! 

We have been busy with both academics and other events.  Apologies to all of you who depend on our blog for information and class assignments.  We have some exciting things going on at Sherman Middle School!

NEWS:
  • Fat Tuesday Fund-raising Dinner is March 8th!  We hope to see many of you there.  
  • Congratulations to our team for being awarded the Nickelodeon Grant.  These students were creative and forthright and was a major part of the success.  Students wrote a poem, choreographed the presentation, and videotaped it.  As a result of their initiative, we were awarded $2500 from Nickelodeon!  Thank you to:  Tia, Cian, Chantelle, Alanna, Samantha, and Damon!
ACADEMICS:

  • Math:  Filling and Wrapping book.  Math worksheet due tomorrow focuses on volume and surface area. 
  • Language Arts: 1)  Final essay due today - this was an in-class assignment given last Thursday.  2) Vocabulary test on Friday, with definitions.  Spelling words are listed below. 3)  I Am From poem final turned in.
  • Science: In-class
  • Social Studies:  Africa!  1)  Map quiz on Friday:  guinea, Guinea Bissau, Cote d Ivore, Liberia  2)  In-class notetaking.  3)  Continual study of New Orleans .
  • Reading:  1)  Book group books - reading and in-class assignments.  Work on finishing the book by Friday.  2)  Final assessment is a Character Analysis paper.
